In his studio, Daniel Varela merges classical elements with technology, creating a space where art and innovation coexist. Among cameras, brushes, and digital tools, he pushes creative boundaries, producing works that blend human sensitivity with artificial precision.
Laura Rivas (L): Daniel, your works uniquely combine the human and the digital. How would you define this relationship in your art?
Daniel Varela (D): It’s a true coexistence. For me, digital art doesn’t replace the human aspect—it enriches it. With cognitive technology, I bring a new dimension to creativity while keeping the human touch as the central element in each piece. Technology serves as an extension of our sensitivity, allowing me to explore realms otherwise unattainable.
L: So, is technology more than just a tool?
D: Absolutely. I see it as a creative partner. It helps me create concepts, textures, and drafts that expand visual expression possibilities. It’s like having a constantly evolving digital sketch that I refine to capture exactly what I want to express. Every detail reflects my vision, not the machine’s.
LR: How do you maintain the human essence in each piece?
D: That’s fundamental. My goal is to preserve an authentic connection in every piece—a spark of life. Even with advanced techniques challenging my creativity, I ensure the final result always reflects authenticity. Technology is powerful, but the message remains mine.
L: I find it interesting that you describe your process as a “dialogue.” Can you elaborate?
D: Sure. Working with cognitive technology feels like a continuous exchange between traditional and digital approaches. AI isn’t the end; it’s a resource that lets me explore and experiment. But I’m the one steering the process and giving soul to each image. To me, it’s a dialogue where the human and the digital complement rather than compete.
L: Does this approach also influence the concept of authorship?
D: Definitely. Although technology aids me, I’m the one giving life and context to each piece. Authorship remains intact because the artist infuses meaning and emotion into the creation. AI is a medium, but the message is deeply human.
L: How do you envision the future of this collaboration between art and technology?
D: I imagine a future where cognitive technology continues enhancing each artist's individuality. The human aspect will always be essential in the creative process. No matter how advanced AI becomes, the essence of great art will always lie in human passion and sensitivity.
L: Lastly, what would you say to other artists hesitant to explore this technology?
D: I’d say don’t fear it. See technology as an opportunity to expand your horizons. We’re living in a unique time where the human and artificial can merge to create something groundbreaking. As creators, we have a responsibility to use today’s tools to shape the art of the future.
